2nd Geocache in Sinaia 2nd Geocache in Sinaia

On my way back from an excellent skiing day in Predeal I decided to go after my second Geocache. Check out the geocache data for GC1CZCE on Geocaching.com.

I had scouted the area the night before so it was now just a matter of poking around Sinaia's World War 2 memorial cemetery looking for the cache. It was good Ionut and Andrei were there to lend a hand, not just for the idea of having the army and religion on my side in an army cemetery, or because cemeteries and memorials tend to be spooky after dark, but simply because it made crawling a lot easier as someone else was holding the flashlight.

Last Skiing Weekend of the Winter?

I've had a smashing good time this weekend. 8 descents snowboarding in Azuga, 10 descents skiing in Predeal, bowling, drifting, clubbing, geocaching. I added a good new restaurant to the list, met new people, made new friends, got back in touch with old friends, spent quality time with members of the gang.

Big thanks go to all involved!

The highlight was the skiing, even more so as I expect I won't be doing it again on this scale until next winter. So, that's 14 days of skiing so far this year if my calculations are correct.

My First GeoCache My First GeoCache

Last night after a very successful business day me and Cipri decided to go to the AB4 concert in Club Control. The concert was very good and I also met a few interesting new people, but going home at 1:00 am on a Thursday night really isn't my thing.

So, I was just telling Cipri about GeoCaching on the way home, and as I was speaking it was becoming more and more clear we had to do it. I had two cache locations loaded into my HTC so we decided to activate the closest one. 10 minutes later we were walking through Cismigiu park in the dark looking for the coordinates.

Once we figured out we were dealing with a pretty big GPS error (~5m or more) we started looking around for potential hiding places for the cache. We were lucky enough to find it after no more than 5 minutes. It was a small black film tube containing the log in the form of rolled up strips of paper and a pencil. We signed it and put it back.

So this was our first cache. It was probably good we went there in the middle of the night. In all the excitment of our search we might have gotten caught by muggles had we been there in broad daylight. For a moment we thought we were going to get questioned by jandarmes for being in the park at night.

For those of you who don't know what Geocaching is the Wikipedia article on Geocaching is a good place to start.
To see the details of the cache we found you can check it on Geocaching.com
To see visual confirmation of the two of us at the AB4 concert check out picture 36 on TillLate.com

The End of Civilization

It's been a very busy week and it's far from over. I've got so many important topics in mind but I've decided to stop on this video on how the world could have come to a premature stop simply because it's fast and funny.

This is apparently part of an ad for something. What that something is surpasses my analytical abilities.

Thanks, Mada, for the links to the top quality YouTube content.

My Bloody Valentine - Horror in 3D My Bloody Valentine - Horror in 3D

Last night we went for a 3D horror film at Liberty Mall. There were a couple of choices but we went for the reputedly less horrifying one with the pickaxe. The movie was full of blood and gore but not very intense horror-wise. It did make good use of the 3D part though.

After the movie was over most people went home. I went to a party in Club 24 in Regie. Didn't hang around for too long though.

We had to do something truly interesting so we figured, since we were still discussing the movie, we needed to find a pickaxe. So... we went to Metro to buy one (after midnight). They didn't have any, and although we found a pretty impressive axe and a handy-looking shovel, we decided we had enough fun and it was time to drop it. Not before negotiating with the lady cashier over a second-hand pickaxe she had at home that she offered to sell us complete with earth and red paint.

Teenage Personal Development Consultancy

Over the past few days I've attended a conference in Oradea on "Education and Social Change". It was good to meet so many people interested in developing and improving the Romanian education system.

Although I've listened in on a lot of interesting topics throughout the works of the conference, the one thing I'd like to make a note of was an idea that came to my attention accidentally during the last session of the conference. Amidst all the researchers and university professors a man stood up to ask a question and began by introducing himself as a business consultant. The question itself is not relevant to my point in this post. He went on to explain that one of the things he is a consultant for is personal development, and that he does a sort of personal development/career steering work with young people.

I'll try to explain things. He basically takes a teenager, let's say 12 to 18 years old, the kind who studies 6 hours in school every day and then 4 more hours in private sessions due to the current generalized tendency of the parents to strive for over-achievement, and works on optimizing their activity. The goal isn't necessarily to pump as much knowledge and wisdom into the poor children but to enable them to also live/"be children" just for a little while each day, on the side of all the work they have to go through. I was impressed by the idea, both from the humanitarian and the business opportunity point of view.

Rasnov Satanists Rasnov Satanists

By now you've probably figured out that whenever I go "missing in action" for a few days it's either due to too much fun or too much work. This time around it's actually both, but as I don't like to tell sad stories about why I'm writing this post at 5:00 am during a 5 minute break from work I'll focus on the positive side of the past couple of days.

One of the highlights of the weekend was a short hike up to the Rasnov fortress. You might say to yourself "walking from a parking lot to the locked gate of a castle doesn't seem like much to talk about". However, let me state that things change slightly when the walk in question takes place just after midnight, in the dark, with someone telling you stories of young girls murdered by satanists in the woods around you.

I had never fully considered the potential of a night visit to an abandoned castle or a candle-lit tour of the catacombs of a European city. I'm starting to consider...

Thank you, Carmen, for the initiative and the excellent story telling.

A Bridge a Day... A Bridge a Day...

People from a village in Suceava county got together last Friday to rebuild a bridge that had been taken away by flood waters last summer. The bridge on national road DN 17A was supposed to be rebuilt by authorities ages ago, being a high priority for the area.

Sick of fixing their cars the village people built a wooden bridge in a SINGLE day, tested it with a 10 ton load and even placed signs restricting its use to vehicles under 2.5 tons and 2.5 meters tall.

In recognition for their help, local authorities are threatening members of the community who took part in the build with sentences of 1 to 3 years of imprisonment for illegal construction.

Digital Talent

Technology is changing all our lives in so many ways it's hard to even keep up. One of the fields where technology is making a difference that I enjoy the most are the arts, graphical arts in particular. Here is a true work of art created by a 19 year-old Russian-Greek female artist named Lideeh. The embed code below gives you a fast-forwarded recording of the actual creation process. It's amazing.

I always liked watching other people draw or paint and I must confess watching things in fast motion sort of condenses the whole feeling of observing the artistic process. Thank you, Lideeh!

Cluj on Ice Cluj on Ice

With the risk of everybody starting to think I've developed a one track mind, focused solely on Ice Skating, I will say that I had a great time in Cluj on Saturday afternoon. What did I do? I went Ice Skating!!!!

I'm actually mentioning this because, of all the places I've been ice skating so far, the skating rink in Cluj had the most prime-spot location I've seen. Take the fact that the skating rink was right in the center of the city, practically attached to the Catholic Cathedral, and combine it with the exceptionally warm, pleasant and sunny weather on the day and you might start to understand why I'm so pleased with the whole thing.

Big congratulations to Carmen on being such a brave and good student, and an incredibly speedy learner.
