Christmas Lights
Tonight I took my Mother and my Grandmother on a little drive visiting
Comarnic and the neighbouring towns and villages to see and compare the
Christmas lights. We went to Breaza, Talea and Sinaia and before that I
had been with Ancuta and my Mother to Secaria.
I'd like to give Sinaia, Comarnic and Secaria a very good mark for
their Christmas lighting efforts (each according to its own
aspirations) and very, very bad marks to Breaza and Talea for their
lack of aspirations.

Our Christmas Traditions
Saturday evening we went on our traditional Christmas caroling round, visiting the houses of some of our former teachers from highschool. We had to go a day early this year and many of the regulars were missing, all because of work-related problems and other such measly insignificant things that trouble our modern lives.
Sunday evening school-kids came Christmas caroling (the 23rd seems to have become the traditional day for high-school kids and students). As we have two teachers in the house we were perhaps blessed with a few more than most other houses. We later counted 138 confirmed faces in the pictures and recordings but there may have been more.
This morning the little kids came Christmas caroling on the traditional round. They weren't many (compared to the previous evening) but they were the cuter cherry on the cake.
This town ROCKS as far as some traditions are concerned.

Spammers
I've caught a pretty nasty cold so I'm feeling less sympathetic to my fellow man than I would usually feel. Because of that I've decided it's finally time to rat on a little big spammer.
Here's the idea: Whenever I subscribe to a newsletter or give my address to a website I use a distinct email address. Instead of having a single email address I have an entire domain that I use solely to subscribe to newsletters and such. This allows me to track exactly what address I entered on which site.
A few months ago somebody launched Daily Business .ro (I'm not linking to them because that would be good for them). I soon found myself subscribed to them with two addresses that I could easily track to two other websites I signed up with.
Shame on you, Daily Business, for buying email lists. Shame on you, Top MBA, for selling your email lists or for not protecting them properly. The other site had some fairly weird terms of service so one could argue I gave my consent.

Internet for the Colour Blind
What would you do if one day you found out you were colour blind? Well, this might just be the day you find out if you are or not.
There's a Firefox Extension which is designed to change the colours of the content you browse online so that it matches the kind of colour blindness the user has.
Yes, there is more than one kind of colour blindness. Yes, Mozilla Firefox is the greatest browser in the world.
The extension also has a test embedded into it to help you determine if you're colour blind and if yes to what colours.
Get the Colour Blind Extension and, if you really are the last person in the world still not using it, get Firefox.

Thoughts about Christmas
I finally wrote my letter to Santa Claus tonight. It was very helpful as you'd expect. I think it's always helpful to stop and think about what you really want.
Anyway, I realized I want a lot of things for myself but those aren't the most important. Looking at my letter I saw there are things I want other people to have that are apparently more important to me.
Speaking of Christmas, I also found it to be socially important in one of my recent tooth-brushing meditative moments. I realized that there are probably many people out there who don't think about making gifts all year round and they're pushed into doing it by the Christmas tradition (a.k.a. spirit). Giving creates goodwill and improves feelings between people and thus leads to a better society overall.

Snowy Weekend
This weekend was dedicated to snow. Looking for it. Playing in it. Drifting on it. Running from it. Preparing for it.
Saturday night we went to Azuga to the ski slope to play in the snow. We then searched for a restaurant that would still be open at midnight. There is only one in Busteni and two in Sinaia. Now we know all of them.
Today after taking (and hopefully passing) an exam in Ploiesti around noon we (Costi and I) bought ourselves the coolest fingerless gloves. We headed for Bucharest via Buftea. As we drove, the snow started to fall heavier and heavier, covering the road and making our trip interesting and thrilling. This is where the drifting and drafting comes in.
When we were just about to enter our street in Bucharest we decided it would be a pitty to waste all the snow so we just dropped off some of the luggage very quickly and went to Cismigiu for more snowy fun.
All I can say as the weekend comes to an end is that if you didn't roll around in the snow at all this weekend you really missed out.

Sites for ... Escorts
I actually found a company today that specializes in websites for "escorts". When I say escorts I do mean ... that kind of escort. I'm sure not all their clients offer the full range of services but with the prices they have I imagine most clients who can afford them do. Maybe some even offer services on the "wilder" (librarian-fantasy sado-masochistic whip-wielding) side of escorting.
Because I don't even know if I should be impressed or appalled by these guys I'm definitely not putting their website address here.

IM in the Sky
While I'm not entirely sure yet if we're just talking about free wifi
on airplanes, and if so, why there's a custom version of Y! Messenger
that you need to use, Yahoo! recently announced that they've partnered
with an airline to offer mail and messenger to passengers on their
laptops and web-enabled phones during the company's flights.
It's still in beta but I don't think it will take too long for this to become widespread.
Take a look at the official announcement on the Yahoo! Messenger Blog.

Pieces of Mr. Magorium's Wisdom
Last night we saw Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium at the Movieplex. It was essentially a children's movie but some of the stuff was very deep and philosophical. I guess that partially justifies scheduling a movie like that at 10:00pm.
Potentially memorable quotes: "We don't wait. We breathe ...37 seconds is a life time".

Cannibal Corpse Lounge Music
I know I've already driven some of you mad with this little video but I just have to make sure everybody knows what we're talking about. Listen to it. It's pretty self explanatory and make sure you pay attention at the very end.
And remember: "The lyrics aren't the problem. It's the music".
Thanks, Andrei, for bringing this work of art to our attention.
To hear an original bit from an actual Cannibal Corpse concert I recommend this live version of Hammer Smashed Face.
