An Hour of TV - LRAD
I actually had the time to sit and watch TV one of these past few days. I mean not in the usual way, that is, leave the TV set on while I do 2-3 other things. I actually sat down and watched for an hour.
You might be wondering, what did I choose to watch for this precious hour...
I watched Discovery Channel's Future Weapons, hosted by Richard "Mack" Machowicz, more specifically the Future Shock episode. I'm going through all the trouble of giving all these details because on this show I saw one very interesting piece of technology called LRAD.
LRAD stands for Long Range Acoustic Device and it's definitely worth a look. It's basically a non-lethal weapon that uses sound waves as a means of attack. I think the potential commercial applications of this technology go far beyond the military ones.
More information about it can be found on: Wikipedia The Manufacturer's Website BBC News article on real-life usage

Flooded with Cars
OK, so I can understand Bucharest grew up in a time when the "Great Ruler of All" was sure he wouldn't allow people to have more than 300 000 cars so road infrastructure wouldn't be a problem.
Those times are gone now.
I can also understand that in many places it's nearly impossible to find the space to enlarge the roads and provide adequate parking spaces.
But, Mr. Becali, when there's a load of space around your stadium why don't you build a damned parking lot so your supporters don't take every parking space on a 2 mile radius whenever there's a footbal match.
For those who are wondering, I am writting this because I happen to live less than a kilometer away from the stadium and tonight I spent 30 minutes looking for a place to park and I ended up parking at the gates of a cemetery half a kilometer away.

Broken Down Hot Rod
So this heavily modified "American Hot Rod" (see enclosed picture) pulls over with smoke coming from both ends, the engine at the front and the exhaust at the back.
We're all watching with great interest the 6 or more people crammed inside as they debate the issue in a very lively manner. The driver firmly presses his tatooed shoulder against the door opening it on his second attempt. :) This part was just funny.
The extremly funny part came later. After trying to fix their car I guess these people realized there was nothing more to do. Bumblebee couldn't be saved. :)) So, they decided that they'd leave the car there and just go back home or go to the seaside or wherever they were going by other means.
The thing is they didn't just leave it there. Before leaving they put a sign in the window saying "For sale - 9 million"... (at current exchange rate 283 euros)

Symphonic Fun
What to do with a symphonic orchestra behind you.
OK, so maybe the orchestra didn't do that much. This guy is good!

Patriarchal Media Coverage
The Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church, IPS Teoctist, died on Monday morning. May he rest in peace. He was a good man.
As I'm not really the church-going type, the reason I'm writing about this is that when I woke up this morning 8 out of 30 Romanian channels were broadcasting the funeral service. That's almost one in three and I've counted the music channels in the total number.

Fun Time with Microsoft
I'm no Microsoft fan.
If I'd be the master tyrant-dictator of the world I'd probably make all people use Linux. As this is not the case I've become pretty indifferent to the whole issue. For some things I use Linux, for some things I use Windows because... well, it's more suitable.
Now, I really have to give Microsoft a big thumbs up on their new Office 2007 advertising campaign. Far from some of the old brainwashed campaigns I actually found this one to be very funny.
Check it out!
Make sure you have a look at some of the other videos too.

Uptime Monitor
Being really unhappy with the options provided by existing server monitoring services we decided we'd make our own. A while ago we started developing a monitoring application that would be suitable for more than just verifying site uptime. We're talking major features under the bonnet.
Well, we're still days away from the official launch but I just can't keep this to myself anymore.
Here's a sneak preview!

Tabs from the past
If you were playing guitar in Romania 4-5 years and you were always on the hunt for fresh tabs you had to know about acorduri.go.ro.
Well, good, old acorduri.go.ro is being revived by its owner under a new name. RZN showed me one very interesting piece of work found as the tabs were being moved to the new site.
link
Yeap, it's my very own contribution to the acorduri.go.ro archive, subscribed on January 29th 2002 at 3:00am. OK, so maybe the song isn't the most representative for my guitar playing days but it does bring back good memories of simpler, sunnier days.

Weekend Swim
This was a very slow weekend. I didn't manage to do much besides sleep and eat.
We made up for some of the slowness earlier this afternoon, at a friend's swimming pool, jumping, diving and playing tag in the water.
Just to show that all this tremendously hot weather is good for something, the water in the swimming pool was about 28 degrees celsius. Combine this with a complete lack of wind or breeze and you'll get a perfect day for the swimming pool.

Vodafone
Today we've completed the changeover of the company phone group from Zapp to Vodafone. This means our old Zapp phone numbers are no longer valid but if you were in my contact list you probably got an sms with the new phone number by now.
The reasons for this change will probably interest everyone most of all.
Well, Zapp has poor coverage and a limited choice of crappy phones. Adding more phones to the Zapp group meant giving up some of our signup bonuses. There are other issues as well but I will just leave it at that.
Honestly, I was determined to switch to any other provider that offered better coverage even if it would cost a bit more. The surprising thing was that Vodafone actually made us an offer that was more convenient financially as well. Rest assured we ran all the computations before doing this, so, for now at least, I advise anyone to "Vote for Vodafone!"
