The Gapminder World 2006
You've seen it in the presentation in my previous post. Now, here's how it developed in present times:
The cool dynamic statistical presentation tool used by Hans Rosling in the TED video is now available as a Google Tool.
You can find some of the other tools together with other cool statistical things on the GapMinder Website.

The Best Stats Ever
Probably one of the coolest presentations ever...
But then again who knows?! There are lots more on the TED Talks website. I haven't had time to have a detailed look yet but I'm looking forward to a moment of spare time to browse through some more.

Movie Night
I've been watching movies for the past 5 hours or so. First we went to the Plaza with the intention of watching California Dreamin'. We saw Shrek the Third instead. Hilarious! I really don't think they make animation movies for kids anymore. I REALLY enjoyed the scene where Artie says: "The only person standing between who you are and who you want to be is... YOU!"
Then we got back home just in time to see a British movie Costi got on DVD: Hot Fuzz. It was great. British humour with horror/thriller bits and quite a bit of action.

The Educational Coupon
There's an interesting article in the current issue of the Financial Week (RO: Saptamana Financiara) about how the educational system should be privatized.
The proposal is actually a slight adaptation of Milton Friedman's writings on the same issue. The idea would be for the state to give parents an "education cheque" that they could use to send their children to kindergarten, school or whatever. This way poor people's ability to keep their children in school wouldn't be affected and competition between educational institutions would be encouraged thus leading to an improvement in quality of education and a decrease in costs.
You can read the full article in Romanian here.

Holiday
Last night I had my last MBA exam for this semester. Altogether, I'm pretty happy with the way it went. I'm still waiting for 3 marks so I'm not going to issue any press releases until then.
Now I'm really happy for a pretty simple reason. Although I've got a pretty respectable age and my teenage years seem far behind, it still feels like the summer holiday is here. Yeeeeeaaahhh!

Truck in the Night
A picture is worth a thousand words. This one perhaps needs a few explanations.
Last night around 4:30 am a truck nearly rammed into our fence in Comarnic.
The driver says he had to break left to avoid an incoming car, so he drove the truck over the ditch and onto the sidewalk, straight towards our fence. He then managed to control the car so that he didn't hit either the big, concrete telephone pole nor our fence, passing just in between. He ended up stuck in the same ditch some 50 meters away, as you can see in the enclosed picture.
He was very lucky the accident ended only with minor damages to property but he was REALLY lucky he didn't touch even a single one of Grandpa's flowers.

Languages of Europe
I've found a really cool map of the distribution of European languages.
You can see more about it here, on Wikipedia, or you can access its full-size format directly here.

Cable Management
In university they sometimes told us being a manager was no easy thing. Well, I think they were right as I learned a few things about management this weekend. Not the kind of things you'd expect as I'm actually talking about cable management. I learned the expression off the box of a powerful chinese-crafted artifact called "Cable Management Kit".
I spent Saturday and Sunday arranging cables after I moved some computers and I had to rewire the apartment. You can see what I'm talking about in the enclosed picture and you should also be able to get an idea of how good a manager I really am.

Tie a Tie in a Car
In the fray of battle, trying to get to the Marketing Exam on Friday, I did something I'd never done before. Actually, I can only think of one other (pretend) person whom I've ever seen doing it and that person is Mr. Bean.
As I was driving my car towards the Academy I tied a double knot in my tie... a pretty well-done knot if I may say so myself. In case you missed it the first time I'll say it again: as I was DRIVING (as in not standing still but in motion), I put a tie on. After all, there's only a law against talking on the phone, nobody says anything about strangling yourself while driving being illegal.
The attached picture is unfortunatelly not of that particular knot but of the one I have on today but I assure it was just as fine a specimen as this one.

The Story of the Stones
I'm not actually going to write anything now. I just want to point out a post by one of my favourite contemporary authors, my good friend Mihai, who wrote a story, passed down from his Grandfather, about our hometown.
Read the story (in Romanian) here and let's hope he gets around to writing more of them.
