GfK Christmas Party GfK Christmas Party

Last night was GfK's traditional Christmas party. Their Christmas parties are always great so I won't linger too much on the details. It's sufficient to say that we got back home at about 6:00 am.

The interesting story about this party happened on Friday when I was determined to find a shirt to match Ancuta's dress. I had already tried to find one a few days before but on Friday I actually allocated a few hours for a raid on several shopping centers. You can see the result in the associated picture.

I don't think I've ever spent so much time looking for a colour and a texture.

Party Season

I just came back from a killer Christmas party organized by AutoExpert, for which I really have to congratulate Claudia and Daniela on their planning abilities (and Anca for her guidance of all). Great location, great people, really good fun.

I'd like to make a special note about Mihai's exceptional appearance tonight. He really deserves the note for that and for all his work on the AutoExpert website... and for being such a big fan of my blog.

I was also very glad to finally meet my liaison in person. I guess it's part of the strangeness of online business to talk to somebody daily and only get to see them after 3-4 months. I was just as positively impressed in person as I was by ways of digital communication.

This post is called Party Season because tonight many of my colleagues from the PhD school also went to a club for a kind of PhD Christmas party. December rocks!

The House I Always Wanted The House I Always Wanted

St Nicholas was particularily generous this year. He gave me a house. I guess after all the letters I sent him he finally caught on.

I probably should have been a bit more specific though, as I had in mind some slightly different materials and I thought it would be a few sizes bigger.

I got a ginger bread house.

Happy Holidays, everyone!

I Was Never Bored

I'm finally out of quarantine and back to my usual schedule. One very interesting thing I realized while being at home, in isolation, for the past two weeks, was that I never get bored.

And this is nothing new. Looking back to when I was younger (much younger) I can't remember ever not having something to do. Long before computers, Lego and other addictive toys that inevitably give you something to occupy your time, I always managed to find something to do. I'm talking about all sorts of discoveries and inventions that came out of my mind and my hands when I had little to no resources.

How to Create an Award-Winning Author

I'm watching these two kids on TV (5-6 years old or something), who have been invited to talk about their blogs. Mind-boggling...

Being so young they obviously came with their mother and Maruta (the host) is asking them stuff and their mother keeps answering for them.

I think it's pretty obvious these kids started writing so early because they have no room to speak in their family. I'd like to get some feedback from J.K Rowling. What was your mother like? :)

UPDATE: link to their blog

Cellphones and Locations Cellphones and Locations

One of the big topics on the news in Romania these days is related to a problem with the 112 emergeny services phone number. It appears that the emergency services are currently unable to trace the source of a mobile phone call so as to be able to promptly dispatch police, ambulance and fire department vehicles in situations when the caller is unable to provide them with any information about location or the nature of the emergency.

Mobile phone carriers will probably install the solutions necessary to fix this soon enough. If not for the good of their clients they will do it for their own good as there seems to be some EU regulation saying they have to. Imagine that!

Personally, I'm glad they'll do that, not necessarily because I will feel a whole lot safer, but because it means this will one day work in Romania as well.

I'm talking about Google Maps Mobile with My Location (beta)

Yes, it's Google Maps on your mobile, which in theory you could already use (if there were any detailed maps for Romania), with a neat new feature (which you can also already use if you have a GPS enabled phone). My Location enables you to find out where you are, using Google Maps and your mobile phone at the touch of a single button. And it works even if your phone is not GPS enabled by tracking down where you are in relation to the GSM towers you're connecting through. That's where the new technology they'll install for the emergency services comes in.

Read more directly on Google's page at the link above.

Thanks, Vlad, for the tip about this new feature.

P.S.: I know exactly who I have to buy this for as soon as it's fully functional

Client Oriented Church

There was a scandal last week about some "highly indecent" movies shot in some churches in Constanta. What struck me most about all of this was the response of the Romanian Othodox Church. What they said was that people shouldn't be worried about the sanctity of the establishments in which they worship because the church is blessed frequently, the priests even run a full high-level blessing procedure every month, so the churches are wiped clean of any sins that might have been performed inside. This obviously isn't an exact quote as I'm just trying to emphasize something.

Now, who says the church is an antiquated organization. The first thing they did was to reasure their customers about the quality of their products. I think that makes them more client-oriented than some commercial companies.

The Poodwaddle World Clock

I must really like statistics. I don't think I do but all the signs seem to indicate the contrary. Anyway, here's the latest cool toy I stumbled upon today. It's a counter/clock showing how the world is evolving second by second.

You can see even more cool toys like this one on poodwaddle.com where I found it. You'll also find more information about the way the data is estimated.

Moebius Transformations

To start the week with something nice I want to propose an interesting little movie about Moebius Transformations. The movie was made by Douglas Arnold and Jonathan Rogness from the University of Minnesota.

You can get the high resolution version of the movie from this page
http://www.ima.umn.edu/~arnold/moebius/
and you can learn a bit more on Moebius Transformations from the Wikipedia.
