40 Hours of Courses

So I started a PhD and I still have to finish the MBA. Now I've signed up for a little course in Project Management. It all adds up to around 40 hours of courses this week.

Excuse me for not answering the phone... at all.

PhD in Management

It's true, I've waited a long time to make this public, but it's understandable considering the number of things that can go wrong (and did) when you start out on this path.

Long story short, I've been admitted to the Academy of Economic Studies'
Doctoral School in Management. This makes me a PhD Student and legally allows me to append the letters "drd" to my name. I'm not going to do that.

The final goal would be to get my PhD in management over the next 3 years. I'm not going to start a long explanation about why I want/need to do this as I feel it's much more interesting to leave that to speculation.

All I'm going to say is that after having my first day of doctoral school courses on Monday I've been left with a very positive feeling. This seems to be by far the most serious form of Romanian education I've attended until now. Topics are complicated. The professors I've met so far are good.

Best of luck to me! You always need a bit of that as well, no matter what you do.

Traffic Measurement (Offline)

I am writing this from a traffic jam between Piata Presei Libere and Baneasa. It actually started before Piata Presei and will probably go way beyond the Baneasa airport but who cares anymore.

As I'm sitting here writing instead of looking at the clock in anger, as I usually do I'm starting to wonder: what are all these people doing here on a Saturday morning? Well, my theory is that traffic jams in this part of town started after they built Ikea, Carrefour, Metro, Brico Store and all the ather hyper shopping places in the north of town.

But, that's not the point. The point is that I'm starting to wonder if and how they research traffic jams. They're probably counting cars (that's right, even in Bucharest somebody has to be doing something about this) but are they doing anything else? Like, wouldn't it be a good idea to ask drivers where they are going or what their driving habbits are?

It's just a thought. Maybe I'll be able to come back with more information about what's being done from an official source.

Yahoo! Messenger Status Length Fix

The drama, the horror, the insanity! A while ago a Yahoo! Messenger update showed up that it seems everybody installed. The result was that the length of the status message in Yahoo! was limited to about 30 characters.

You can't imagine how desperate some people were because of this. Luckily the fix came along pretty quickly, long before my writing this post actually.

Just in case you haven't figured it out on your own yet go here, get the fix and follow the instructions. To make sure you get it right this is a direct link to the download. Thanks to Adrian Cretu for making this and you should really check out his www.numedecod.ro as there are other nifty messenger-related things to get there.

And... CHILL OUT!

P.S.: If you want to get a bit more technical and want to fix you Yahoo! Messenger manually give me a BUZZ!

Tourism in the Night Tourism in the Night

I'm back home from our little 1392 km road trip.

Because we left late and spent quite a bit of time in various places along the road we arrived in Comarnic at midnight... sharp. This means we saw everything from Curtea de Arges onward in moonlit darkness.

All this actually gave me the inspiration to realize that there's a whole new kind of tourism you can engage in at night. There are monuments with huge light projectors aimed at them that look quite impressive at night as well (see enclosed picture); there's the night life, although it's sometimes pretty far from where the well lit monuments are (Ex: Curtea de Arges monuments - Bucharest nightlife); and there's also another very interesting kind of tourism.

This third kind of tourism is something you might think of organizing at night in the woods of Moroieni (English: ghost), just some 20 km from Sinaia.

Gorges of the Danube

After a brief but very fulfilling stay in Vrsac we returned to Romania, following the road through the gorges of the Danube opposite the one we had travelled just a day before.

We arrived late last night and one of the highlights of the trip through the gorges was seeing the statue of Decebal's head in the moonlight.

We ate so much these past couple of days that I'll probably need a week to recover. It must be something about Banat because on either side of the border people seem to practice a sort of "extreme hospitality".

Serbian Banat Serbian Banat

Tonight I'm in Vrsac in the Serbian part of Banat.

We've had a great bit of road trip today, following the road through the gorges of the Danube on the Serbian side of the river. The enclosed picture is the view of the Mraconia monastery on the Romanian side of the river from the Serbian side. At that point the Danube is only a couple of hundred metres wide.

Later in the afternoon we've also crossed the Danube on a "charming" little ferry. It was made in part of wood... creaking, squeaking WOOD!

More to follow...

Banat Reloaded

Yes, I know it's been a while since I last posted something. That's only because a lot of things have happened that I could have written about. So many, in fact, that I've had 0 free time (-5 even).

Just as a quick update, I'm on a mini holiday in Banat. Today we visited the ruins of Apolodor's bridge in Drobeta Turnu Severin. The Roman emperor Traian used this bridge to invade Dacia. We also visited the monastery of Vodita, dating from the 14th century, apparently the oldest in these parts. Both these visits took 10-20 minutes. The rest of the day... I drove.

Romanian Tenis Open

Among conference workshops and presentations I actually took a few hours of my time today to go to the BNR Arena to watch a few matches of the Romanian Tenis Open (BCR Open Romania).

I was so tired I dozed off for most of the second match. The important thing is that our Romanian player beat his French adversary and made it to the finals.

Also in the end of the day Ilie Nastase teamed up with football player Adrian Ilie to confront his old friend Bahrami, teamed up with football player Dan Petrescu. This was of course just a demonstration game intended to be fun. It was! Very funny and very entertaining!

LATER EDIT: Romanian tenis player, Victor Hanescu, lost the finals on Sunday to French player, Simon.
