We saw California Dreamin' last night at the Movieplex. I had heard it was a good movie and I had been trying to see it for quite some time.
I have to say I agree with the reviews, it was a good movie, definitely worth seeing. I believe that any story deserves credit when it succeeds in bringing out some sort of emotion in its viewers, be it happiness, saddness or whatever. To simplify this particular idea let's just say that the stronger the emotion the better the story.
In the case of Cristian Nemescu's California Dreamin' the predominant emotion was embarassment and judging by the principle listed above it was a very very good story. I will try to explain.
You can read an abstract of the story here. The embarassement part is related to the way the Romanian characters behave in the movie. It was the kind of behaviour that probably everyone has seen in this country or that some of us have perhaps even indulged in at one point of another. It was about doing things so ridiculous it's hard to even imagine how some people can even get those ideas to begin with. Many people seeing this film might get the idea to emigrate.
You probably won't be able to get the full picture unless you go see the movie.
Memorable quote: Upset Girl: "He was just trying to get me into bed. I'm so stupid and ugly." Friendly Boy: "Oh, don't say that, you're not ugly!"
