This weekend I went snowboarding, Saturday evening in Predeal and all day Sunday in Poiana Brasov. I'm getting better and better.
To get the stuff that bothered me out of the way first:
The ski slope lights in Predeal were supposed to stay on till midnight. They were turned off at 22:15. The parking in Poiana Brasov costs as much as it does at the Mariott in Bucharest.
Yesterday was a particularly special day. We picked up a hitch-hiker in Rasnov, Nea Costica, a seasoned ski instructor who represented Romania at the Winter Olympic Games .... in 1948. He truly was one of those fascinating characters who enrich your life just by the few hours or minutes you spend with them.
As it was Ancuta's first time trying out a pair of skis our encounter was particularly fortunate as Nea Costica gave her the very important first pointers needed to get started properly. Not many people can pride themselves to have gotten their first skiing lesson from a living legend.
While we practiced on the beginner slope, Nea Costica, now 85, took the cable car to the top of the mountain to do a bit of sightseeing and came down on his skis fast enough to still have time enough to chat with friends, "fans" and people who knew him for a few good hours before heading back home.
It gets you thinking about what you really need to live a long, healthy, happy life.
