Bed Size = King Size

King Size Bed
We are currently in the process of moving house. We're changing one rented Bucharest apartment for another, closer to the center of the city, with more room to maneuver.

As tradition calls, we're building our own furniture once again. In fact, I've spent more time purchasing materials in the past 2 days than I did in the past 2 years put together.

I've planned my new bed to be 220 cm long by 180 cm wide, which lead many people to call me crazy, insane and a few other things not necessarily appropriate for public use. I've included a little sketch of my upcoming new bed in my new room. Give me an opinion! Is it really too big? is it too small? What?

Interesting issue. I think optimal length depends on your height and the height of anybody else that might end up in your bad. 200 is comfortable enough for 180 heights. The optimal width depends on the couple's age. The older the couple, the wider the bed is needed to be for a succesfull relation. I guess than optimal width values vary from 120 to 200. I would personally include in the equation the remaining space in the room needed for various activities (other than bed activities) - from a poker table to a Viennese waltz dance ring. If space would not be an issue, I would definitely go for a 200 cm round bed :).

Thanks for the very analytical view of the issue. In light of this structured information, I think we can use a bit of Freudian thinking and trace everything back to my dreams of sharing a bed with two blond Swedish twins or a very tall super model.

Either all that, or, it might just be proof of very profound strategic planning, ensuring a great deal of comfort for my upcoming retirement years, only 40 years into the future.

What would be the advantage of a round bed, though?

Good choice of size, ONLY if the room allows... In reality you will use the complete surface of the bed only once or twice in the lifetime of the bed (if we are talking about 2 people sleeping in that bed). I personally have a 215 long/140 wide and found that the 140 width is quite sufficient. The choice of the width is due to the size of the room (I would have chosen 160 if I had the space to put it in) and the 215 are due to me and my significant other being above the average tall... it is more confortable to sleep when your feet are not hanging outside the bed :) On the other hand, you should check the prices for the bed accesories that come in this size... If the bed is 200/180, the cover shoud be 260/240 minimum... and so on...

Thanks for that further bit of analysis. I had considered the fact that only a mattress that size would cost about 200 EUR but you are right there are plenty of other things to consider. I guess it's fit for a king price-wise as well. :)
