Reasons for Poor Attendance
Looking at the many empty seats at the Bucharest Challenge during the weekend I was trying to put together a few possible reasons. The ingenious nature of the Romanian people might account for some of it. I mean, why pay 20 to 700 euros to watch a race when you can watch it for free and exercise your brain as well in the process.
These guys definitely had some of the best seats in the house... though the house wasn't quite built yet.

The Evil Taxi Driver List
I'm thinking of starting a list with bad, crazy or potentially
dangerous taxi drivers and their respective license plates and company
IDs. This should help people to avoid going through what we went
yesterday.
It was nothing much really just a demonstration of how you can slalom
through heavy traffic at 80 kph, changing lanes every 2 seconds without
minding any red lights.

Christianly driving advice from a nun
Those who know me well enough know I tend to drive as close to the
legal limits as possible. This will generally seem rather boring to
most people, driving at 59 kph through a long empty village on a
straight road that seems to be invinting you to race is hard to bare
for most.
Coming back from Herculane we picked up a hitch-hiking nun from Targu
Jiu. Yes it's not a typo... a NUN, the kind you see in monasteries. I
will not go into Why I did that, the circumstances were such that
everybody agreed it was the thing to do.
Long story short, after a couple of villages and after I explained I
intend to not exceed 59 kph inside towns and villages she said: "Yes, I
myself drive a car at our monastery but you know there's no need to
drive THAT slow. There are also nice people who will flash you with
their headlights when there are police radars about".

Tour of Banat
Last Thursday I left Comarnic together with my Grandmother and Grandfather and headed for Herculane. We were back late on Sunday evening after 1300 km through some of the most beautiful parts of Romania.
On day one (Thursday) we did the 460 km from Comarnic to Herculane in a little less than 9 hours. We only stopped in a few places along the way to eat. The sights were pretty interesting but it was mostly places I'd already seen before.
Friday morning was dedicated to several business matters and then we had the entire afternoon to do some visiting of the local sights. We only went for a short 20 km drive up the Cerna valley, stopping every few hundred meters to take pictures. It was just enough to give us the opportunity to spot a forest fire in the Domogled national park. As there was obviously no signal on any mobile phone network I drove back down into Herculane as fast as I possibly could on the winding mountain road to call it in.
It appears I wasn't the first as the rangers were already on their way.
We had set day 3 aside for the Danube Straits (Romanian: Clisura Dunarii) with its Big Hollows and Small Hollows (Romanian: Cazanele Mari si Cazanele Mici). There are no words good and fair enough to describe the beauty of these places. We had lunch at Cabana Dunarii in Moldova Noua, high on top of a hill overlooking the Danube which seemed to surround us on all sides.
The original plan was to return the same way we came, via Orsova, but thankfully the many road works convinced us to return through the Mountains of Banat by way of Oravita and Anina. Breathtaking scenery all the way, more winding mountain roads and a surprising unknown river (to myself at least), the Minis, carving spectacular gorges (Romanian: chei) as it descended towards its meeting point with the Nera River.
The pictures of this day just can't do it justice.
Day four. We returned to Comarnic on another road, heading up the Cerna river, towards Baia de Arama and Targu Jiu. We made a brief stop at the monastery of Tismana and a looong stop in Targu Jiu to admire the work of Constantin Brancusi.
LATER EDIT: Total length of journey: 1284 km.

Gaming in Style
Yesterday after the morning presentations at the Club were over I found myself having a few spare hours due to a meeting that had to be cancelled. I thought I'd seize the opportunity and use the time to try something I'd been thinking of for a long time.
I hooked up the laptop to a video projector and to a serious set of speakers (the ones used for outdoor concerts and such) and tried a few rounds of Tiberium Wars.

Super Wedding
We went to a wedding this weekend, although just calling it "a" wedding is probably far, far from enough. It was probably the best wedding I've ever been to.
Just the number and quality of the artists who performed would be enough to set this wedding far ahead of anything else. To name just a few, Irina Loghin, Fuego, Adrian Enache, Gheorghe Turda, Nico all came together to create one huge piece of entertainment.

Archery Competition in Lipova
I got back this morning from the Archery Competition in Lipova. So far all I have to show for it is a very cool picture where you can see the arrow leaving my bow.
I will hopefully add more on the topic later.

Fiscal Freedom Day
An interesting initiative. I particularly liked the idea of the 6.82 lei note. Long story short the total amount of money going to the government through taxation in Romania equals 31.8% of GDP. That leaves us with the other 68.2%.

Death from Work Exhaustion
It's been all over the press this week. A lot of people wrote about it.
I just thought I'd make a note of it for people who don't read Romanian
papers, or Romanian for that matter.
A 29 year-old manager from Ernst & Young Romania died last
Saturday, apparently from exhaustion after weeks of non-stop work.
More information here (Romanian) and here (English).
I'm taking 5 days off.

Big Tasty
I finally went to McD's to see what all the hype is about. The idea of having an enormous sandwich is great when the sandwich tastes good. However, a huge amount of something that tastes like it's been on fire too long just isn't OK in my book.
As far as the new supersize sandwich from McDonald's is concerned I vote "NO"!
